What does a Medellín airport transfer cost?
Luis Häberlin·Research and strategy·Updated
A private transfer between José María Córdova airport and El Poblado is $65 USD for up to four people, door to door. An official airport taxi runs roughly 100,000 to 120,000 Colombian pesos for the same trip. The airport is in Rionegro, 45 to 60 minutes from the city.
The short version
Three options, three different products:
- Private transfer: $65 USD, up to four people, door to door.
- Official airport taxi: roughly 100,000 to 120,000 Colombian pesos.
- Uber or DiDi: usually a little under the taxi, with a worse pickup.
The peso figures move with the exchange rate and with official tariff changes, so treat them as the range to expect rather than a quoted price.
Why the airport is 45 minutes away
José María Córdova is not in Medellín. It sits above the city near Rionegro, roughly 35 kilometres away and around 400 metres higher, and the road between them crosses the mountain.
That drive is 45 minutes on a clear Tuesday morning and can be 90 on a Sunday evening when everyone with a country house is coming back into the city at the same time. Most people underestimate this, then plan the first evening around a transfer that has not finished.
When the taxi is the right answer
If you land in daylight, travel light, speak enough Spanish to confirm a destination, and are not in a hurry, take the official taxi from the rank. It costs about a third of the private option and it is a completely normal way to arrive.
Two rules: take the official rank rather than anyone who approaches you inside the terminal, and agree the fare before the car moves.
When it stops being the right answer
The cheap option gets expensive in a few specific arrivals:
- A late landing. Most US flights arrive at night. Negotiating a car at midnight in a language you do not speak, tired, with luggage, is the situation that produces most of the bad first nights.
- Four people with bags. At that point you are splitting $65 four ways, and the gap closes to a few dollars each.
- A first visit. The 45 minutes is when someone tells you which neighbourhood you are actually staying in, what things should cost, and which of the things you read online were true.
What the $65 covers
A vehicle for up to four with luggage, a driver, and door to door service in either direction. The flight is tracked, so a delay does not mean the car has gone, and waiting time is included rather than billed. You are met inside the terminal rather than found in a car park.
It does not cover a second vehicle for a larger group, or a stop on the way that turns the transfer into a tour.
The honest comparison
For a couple arriving at two in the afternoon, the taxi is the better deal and it is not close.
For four people landing at eleven at night on a first trip, $65 buys a known driver, a known car, and a first hour that is not spent solving a problem. Both of those are correct answers to different arrivals.
Questions
- Which airport should I fly into?
- José María Córdova (MDE) in Rionegro takes all international flights and most domestic ones. Enrique Olaya Herrera (EOH) sits inside the city but only handles short domestic hops. If you are flying from the US, you are landing at MDE.
- Is Uber legal in Colombia?
- It operates in a legal grey area rather than a clearly legal one, and it works in practice. At MDE specifically the pickup is awkward: drivers often ask you to walk out of the arrivals area and sit in front, which is exactly what a tired traveller at midnight does not want.
- How much luggage fits?
- Four passengers with normal checked bags. If you are four people with surfboards, golf clubs or camera cases, say so when you book, because it changes the vehicle rather than the price.
