What does bottle service cost in Medellín?

Luis Häberlin·Research and strategy·Updated

Clubs in Medellín sell tables as a minimum spend rather than a flat fee, typically starting around 800,000 Colombian pesos on a normal night and climbing well past 2,000,000 at the busiest venues on a Saturday. A guided night with tables arranged in advance is $890 USD for up to six.

The short version

Medellín clubs do not sell a table for a fixed price. They sell a minimum spend: an amount you commit to spending on bottles and mixers, in exchange for a reserved table and service.

As a rough shape of the market, a normal night at a normal venue starts around 800,000 Colombian pesos, and the busiest rooms on a Saturday run well past 2,000,000. Those are ranges to expect and not quoted prices, because they move with the venue, the night, the size of the table and how full the room already is.

A guided night out with the tables arranged in advance is $890 USD for up to six, which is a published, fixed number.

How the pricing actually works

Three things set the number, and only one of them is about you:

The night. Thursday and Saturday are not the same product. The same table can double between them.

The position. A table by the booth and a table near the bathroom carry different minimums in the same room on the same night.

Who is asking. This is the part visitors do not expect. The minimum is not published anywhere, which means it is set in conversation, which means it is set based on what the person setting it thinks you will pay.

Why the foreigner price exists

It is not a scam and it is not personal. It is a rational response to information.

A group of Americans at the door on a Saturday with no local contact, no Spanish, and no alternative venue in mind is the least price-sensitive customer that door will see all night. Whoever quotes the minimum knows that. They would be leaving money on the table not to adjust for it, so they adjust for it.

The thing that changes the number is not negotiating harder. It is arriving as someone the venue already has a relationship with, because a returning source of groups is worth more than one inflated Saturday.

What the $890 covers

A night out for up to six with the venues chosen and the tables arranged beforehand, transport between them, and someone present who knows the room. The tables are booked under a local name rather than yours, which is the entire mechanism by which the price stops being a foreigner price.

It does not cover bottles beyond the agreed consumption. That is worth saying plainly, because "included" is the word this industry abuses most.

When you do not need any of this

Plenty of the best nights in Medellín involve no table at all. A small bar in Laureles, a salsa place in Envigado, or somewhere in Provenza on a Tuesday, none of it needs a reservation and none of it needs a minimum spend.

Table service solves one specific problem: a group of five or six on a Friday or Saturday who want somewhere to actually be, in a room that is full. If that is not the problem you have, do not buy the solution to it.

Questions

Do I need a table to get in?
Usually no. Most places have a general entrance, and on a weeknight you can walk into almost anywhere. A table buys a guaranteed place to stand, a surface, and service, which matter most on a Friday or Saturday when the alternative is holding drinks in a crowd.
Why am I quoted more than my Colombian friend?
Because the minimum spend is negotiable and the person quoting it is guessing what you will pay. A foreign group with no local contact is the least price-sensitive customer walking through that door, and the quote reflects it.
Is bottle service worth it for two people?
Rarely. A minimum spend built for a group of six is a bad deal split two ways. Two people are usually better off at the bar, or at a smaller place where the point is the music rather than the table.
