Medical tourism in Medellín: what it costs and who handles the rest

Most patients underestimate the two weeks around the procedure, not the procedure.

Where the clinics are
The international-patient work is concentrated in El Poblado.
Torres Médicas El Tesoro, beside the El Tesoro shopping centre at Cra 25A #1A sur-45, is the main cluster. The first tower opened in 2013 and ran at full occupancy from the start; a second tower added roughly 600 more specialists. Between them they cover plastic, aesthetic and reconstructive surgery, gastroenterology, gynaecology and obstetrics, nephrology, paediatrics, psychology and emergency services. Clínica El Rosario also operates consulting rooms in the tower.
Being in El Poblado matters more than it sounds. Follow-ups are frequent in the first week, and a twenty-minute taxi across the valley with fresh stitches is a different experience from a five-minute one.
The part that gets underestimated
The procedure is a day. The trip is two weeks.
You cannot fly immediately. Depending on what you have done, clearance to fly is commonly seven to fourteen days out. Book the return loosely and expect to move it.
Follow-ups are not optional and not always scheduled in advance. Expect two to four trips back to the clinic, often at short notice.
You will not want to move much. A cheap Airbnb up four flights of stairs with no lift is a bad decision made two months before you understand why.
Somebody needs to be reachable. Post-operative questions arrive at eleven at night, in Spanish, from a number you do not recognise.
Where to recover
You want quiet, a lift, food you can eat, and short distances to the clinic.
Wake BioHotel, in El Poblado near El Tesoro, is built for precisely this. What I do and what I do not
I do not choose your surgeon. I am not medical, I have no clinical opinion, and you should be suspicious of any fixer who offers one. Choose your own surgeon, verify their registration with the Colombian authorities, and speak to them directly before you book a flight.
What I handle is everything outside the consulting room. Airport pickup that accounts for how you will feel on the way back. Accommodation that suits recovery rather than photographs. Transport to every follow-up. Someone who speaks Spanish at your appointments if you want that. A phone that answers at eleven at night.
That is the work. The clinic is your decision.
